The Region 7 ladies should be very proud of themselves for achieving such a great result. Following a draw and a play - off the final result was a 25 - 26 defeat, which is the closest result ever for the England Ladies under such circumstances. It is not too surprising when you remember the Region team contained the top players from each county not in the current England squad, with one exception. We all know the strength of the Kent ladies side who have past England qualifier Julie Fane, and more recently Mel Clements & Vanessa Ledger and past England qualifier Jo Kent from Sussex and Sue Fletcher from Hampshire who has qualified for England on numerous occasions .
There were very good performances from all players, even those who did not manage to win a frame, put in a lot of hard work to try to secure a finish. Performances worthy of a mention are. Seasoned player Jo Kent (Sussex) top performer with 4 out of 4 (one of them the only win in the play off) a performance that was not unexpected for a player of her quality. Sue Fletcher (Hampshire) put in a fine performance winning 3 out of 4, she was clearly disappointed not to win her frame in the play - off. Julie Fane ‘cool as a cucumber’ under pressure who won 2 out of 3 was clearly gutted not to clinch the hard earned finish to her frame in the play-off. Other players that stood out were Charlotte Batten (Sussex) who played really well to win 2 out of 3. Aimee Firkins (Hampshire) who has only been playing County for 2 years secured a convincing 2 out of 3 wins even though she was invited to replace Hampshire’s top rankers who were unavailable.
Claire Dormer who is a newbie for Berkshire ladies (1 year) managed to win 2 out of 3 despite being a bit ill due to pre match nerves before she arrived and nervous throughout the match. Lindie Snyman Greater London came in from the cold as a reserve to play 1 frame and played brilliantly to win it. Well done girls for a great performance it was a pleasure to watch you. The team spirit was absolutely fantastic. The event was truly a great experience hopefully to be repeated.
